Generation Z Chooses Film Deliberately: Not Nostalgia, but Method

The most fascinating thing about the new film revival is that it's being driven by people who have no nostalgia for it whatsoever.

Generation Z Chooses Film Deliberately: Not Nostalgia, but Method

Film photography is growing steadily: the film market is valued at approximately $613 million in 2026, film consumption has risen 35% since 2021, and the vintage camera market is expanding at double-digit rates. And the main driver is young people.

Why Generation Z

The strongest argument that this isn't a repeat of previous analog waves is that film is being chosen by people who feel no nostalgia for it. Generation Z didn't shoot on film as children — they come to it as a conscious creative act, not a sentimental return. Around 40% describe it as a "digital detox."

Limitation as Value

A finite number of frames, waiting for development, the impossibility of endlessly reshooting — everything that digital photography "fixed" has turned out to be a feature, not a flaw. Film restores mindfulness and the joy of process that instant results simply cannot provide.
